MOYNE Shire is marking the Australian Heritage Festival with a series of open days, events and a historic photo exhibition with a modern twist.

By Staff Writer

The historic photo exhibition for the festival (which began last Friday and runs until Saturday, May 18) will give viewers a look into the past with 27 historic photos linked to QR codes around the shire.

The QR codes are printed on A4 signs located outside selected historic places and buildings.

When visitors find a sign, they can simply scan the QR code with a smart device and be transported to the past to view a historic photo of the site or building.

The QR code signs will be available throughout the duration of the festival.

Moyne Shire mayor Cr Ian Smith said the signs were located in public spaces, easily accessible for everyone to get involved.

“It will be a fun challenge to locate all 27 signs,” Cr Smith said.

“The festival is a great opportunity for the community to explore our rich and diverse heritage.

“The 2024 festival’s theme of Connections acknowledges our link to people, places and the past, which create enduring connections.”

Scheduled events in Port Fairy will include walking tours, cemetery tours, a lighthouse open day and historic house open days.

Koroit will offer self-guided heritage walking trails, using walking maps that highlight historic locations in each town.

QR codes in Port Fairy and Koroit can be found at the following locations:

Koroit – Commercial Road, Art of Tea, Mickey Bourke’s Hotel, Koroit railway station, Koroit Convent and Lake View Road, Tower Hill.

Port Fairy – Griffith Island, Port Fairy Surf Life Saving Club, Battery Hill, South Beach, Pea Soup Beach, West Beach Cantina, Ironbird Bookshop, Moyne River Wharf, Battery Lane and Drill Hall.

Other Port Fairy locations are Star of the West Hotel, Bank Street, Sackville Street, The Stump, Monday Distillery, Oak and Anchor, Seacombe House, Salt Hair and Port Fairy Botanic Gardens
