Ag students earn coveted awards

WANGOOM’S Sophia Melican and Warrnambool’s Tayah Duthie have been recognised among the burgeoning talent entering the agricultural workforce.

Sophia and Tayah were among more than 107 students (along with family and staff) who came together to celebrate their Rural Industries Skill Training (RIST) graduation.

Sophia, a Diploma of Agriculture graduate, was recognised with a Values in Action Award.

The award is given to those who consistently demonstrate integrity, accountability and positive contribution throughout their studies.

Warrnambool’s Tayah Duthie, who completed a Certificate II in Agriculture, was named winner of the Emerging Leader and Innovator Award.

The award recognises recipients who demonstrate initiative, leadership potential and a forward-thinking approach to agriculture.

RIST chief executive officer Bill Hamill reflected on being part of the graduates’ learning journey and supporting their growth as they progressed through their course.

“Your accomplishment reflects the dedicated focus you have given to making the most of this opportunity of learning from industry-leading agricultural trainers, using the latest technologies and taking classroom theory into practical on-farm, skill-based learning in real-world situations,” he said.

“You represent the future of our industry and are now the critical thinkers with a skillset highly sought after by employers.”

The celebration recognised the achievements of graduates of the Certificate in Agriculture, Certificate II in Shearing, Certificate III in Agriculture, Certificate IV in Agriculture, Certificate IV in Wool Classing, and Diploma in Agriculture.

RIST head of student experience Helen Read said the event was an opportunity to recognise the qualities RIST aims to instil in all its graduates.

“We have also awarded a graduate in each course who exemplifies the values every RIST graduate takes into the agricultural sector,” she said.

“Their curiosity, problem-solving and commitment to continuous improvement through responsible practice, respect for others and commitment to sustainable agriculture.

“Through consistent performance, attention to detail and professional application of agricultural knowledge, they have demonstrated excellence in practice.”
