Allansford defeats Creek to hold top spot

THE closest game in round nine action of the Warrnambool and District senior football competition saw reigning premiers Nirranda score a six point win over Old Collegians.

A seven goal to three third term in favour of the Blues proved pivotal in the 13.10.88 to 13.4.82 result.

In the absence of key forward Nick Harding, Dylan Parish and Hugh Giblin led the goal kickers for Nirranda with three each.

Giblin, James Willsher and Cody Wagstaff were best for the Blues.

For Old Collegians, Jake Dowell, Will McConnell and Paul Campbell were best, with Dowell bagging seven goals.

At the Walter Oval, South Rovers continued to solidify its top five spot with a 17.7.109 to 10.10.70 win over fellow finals contender Timboon.

Zac Urquhart, Kurt Lenehan and Patrick Cunningham were the Rovers best in the win, with Urquhart kicking six goals and Jayden Watson four.

Ben Newey, Liam Loubey and Johno Benallack were Timboon’s best, with Bayley Thompson kicking three goals.

At Merrivale, the home team had a 9.11.65 to 4.8.32 win over Kolora-Noorat.

Jack Gleeson, Jalen Porter and Nathan Krepp were the Tigers best, with Krepp kicking six goals.

Kolora-Noorat’s best were Henry Kenna, Nick Marshall and Caleb Kavanagh, with George Beasley kicking three goals.

In the clash between unbeaten teams Russells Creek and Allansford at the Mack Oval, Allansford came away with a 35 point win, 15.13.103 to 10.8.68.

Cooper Hoffmann, Aiden Gordon and Kade Gordon were best for the Cats in the win, with spearhead Robbie Hare kicking seven goals to take his season total to 50 from eight games.

Best for Russells Creek were Kyle Moloney, Sam Alberts and Jiah Cawthorn, with Thomas Smith, Sam Kelly and Lochie Chadderton kicking three goals each.

Panmure had the bye.

In the A grade netball, Timboon scored a two goal win over South Rovers, 57-55.

Best for the Demons in the win were Tash Hallyburton, Holly Kordupel and Brianna Gass, with Gass shooting 29 goals and Laura Rosolin 27.

Keira Blain, Grace Mugavin and Chloe Manuell were South Rovers’ best, with Grace Mugavin scoring 35 goals and Chloe Manuell 20.

Merrivale got the points against Kolora-Noorat with a 55-48 win.

Chloe Lovell, Kelsey Perry and Layne Porter were best for the Tigers, Lovell scoring 32 goals and Paiyton Noonan 24.

For Kolora-Noorat, Ailish Glennen, Emily Forrest and Tara Elliott were best, with Elliott shooting 29 goals and Forrest 18.

At Panmure, the Bulldogs scored a 68-16 win over Dennington.

Best for Panmure were Anna Dickson, Sienna Wickenton and Chloe McKenzie, with Marley Talbot shooting 45 goals.

Bridie Smith, Sophie Jellie and Phoebe Stuart were best for Dennington.

Nirranda had its first loss of the season with a 56-53 loss to Old Collegians.

Maggie Kline, Hannah Garner and Chelsea Quinn were best for the Warriors in the win, with Kline shooting 26 goals, Quinn 15 and Olivia Lenehan 15.

Nirranda’s best were Stephanie Townsend, Thalia Coates and Charlotte Howell; Townsend scoring a match high 37 goals.

Sixth placed Russells Creek had a 40-34 win over fourth placed Allansford.

Molly Evans, Ruby Evans and Alice Cann were best for Creek with Molly Evans shooting 29 goals.

Lisa Pender, Emily Manuell and Ellie Christoforou were Allansford’s best, with Lilly Sanderson shooting 15 goals and Jessica Rohan 12.

This Saturday’s round 10 matches will see Russells Creek host South Rovers at the Mack Oval, Merrivale and Timboon meet at Merrivale, Kolora-Noorat travel to Panmure to play the Bulldogs, Allansford and Nirranda clash at Allansford, with Old Collegians having the bye in the senior football and playing Dennington in the A grade netball.

This weekend will see Panmure’s Daniel Meade break what is believed to be the WDFNL senior games record when he lines up for his 339th senior game for the Panmure club.

Described as the ultimate clubman and team-mate, Meade is a triple premiership player, runner-up best and fairest, and a long-time committee member with the Bulldogs.
