Award open for young musicians
JAZZ musicians under the age of 26 are encouraged to enter a competition as part of next year’s Port Fairy Jazz Festival.
Organisers of the festival – to be held over the weekend of February 9-11 – are hoping to encourage young musicians to join the event.
Titled the John Huf Award, three finalists will play-off in the Lecture Theatre on the Sunday afternoon of the festival.
The winner, declared by a panel of experienced judges, will receive $1000 prize money courtesy of a generous donation by councillor, Damian Gleeson.
Players of any instruments are invited to register for the quest via the festival’s web site or by emailing portfairyjazzfestival@gmail.com.
All entrants are required to submit a video or audio recording of themselves performing two or three jazz solos.
Entries close January 22 and finalists will be notified.
To date, more than 100 bands have registered to play during the weekend of the festival in nine of the town’s venues.
The music will be performed by groups ranging from bands of 20 musicians through to duos, trios and quartets.
The 2024 festival will feature some top vocalists and instrumentalists including the likes of Sarah MacLaine, Pippa Wilson, Rebecca Barnard, Heather Goddard and Cheryl Kelly.
