Beach Patrol hits the road
BEACH Patrol volunteers will hit the road this month, extending their efforts to the Fitzroy River Estuary.
The group regularly expands its clean-up efforts to areas that are often known as plastic pollution hot spots.
On Sunday, April 14 the group (in conjunction with Glenelg Hopkins CMA) will travel by bus to spend a few hours cleaning up along the river and beach.
The clean-up will be followed by a barbecue lunch, provided by the CMA, before members sort and count their find and board the bus for home.
According to members, last year’s trip to the Fitzroy River Estuary resulted in the removal of more than 119kg of rubbish (most of which was small plastic items) which amounted to 4158 pieces of rubbish.
One of the most interesting ‘finds’ of the day last year was a message in a bottle that had been discarded off the Portland pier 10 years prior – and members were able to make contact with its sender.
The bus will leave the Flagstaff Hill car park at 9am on April 14, with pick-ups also scheduled for Koroit Village Green at 9.15am and the Port Fairy Information Centre at 9.30am.
As seats are limited, bookings are essential.
Volunteers are also welcome to make their own way there, however, pre-registrations would be welcome for catering purposes.
For information simply head to the group’s facebook page, Beach Patrol 3280, or email beachpatrol3280@gmail.com.
It is free to join the group.
