City to host Aboriginal carnival
WARRNAMBOOL will welcome up to 4000 players, officials and supporters this October for a major Aboriginal football and netball carnival

The Victorian Aboriginal Community Services Association Ltd will bring its state-wide senior football netball carnival to the city, with teams expected to travel from across Victoria and interstate.
Matches will take place across Reid Oval, Mack Oval and Walter Oval.
Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said council was proud to support the event.
“With Reconciliation Week just a short time ago and the launch of council’s Reconciliation Strategy and Action Plan, we are excited to be able to continue the momentum with the confirmation of this major event,” he said.
“One of the key focus areas of the strategy is empowering First Nations people to thrive and to strengthen health, wellbeing, inclusion and cultural safety.
“This is an opportunity for us to put our words into actions and we are proud to play host to what will be a massive weekend of sport and a celebration of Aboriginal culture.
“Over the weekend of October 10 and 11 some of the best Aboriginal footballers and netballers in the nation will be in Warrnambool.
“The carnival will also provide a boost to the local economy while reinforcing Warrnambool’s reputation as a premier destination for regional sporting events.”

VACSAL community development officer June Bamblett said the carnival plays an important role in bringing communities together in a safe and respectful environment.
“This carnival is about connection, culture and community pride,” she said.
“It provides a positive platform for Aboriginal people of all ages to come together through sport, while promoting healthy lifestyles in a safe, alcohol and drug-free environment.
“We’re excited to bring the event to Warrnambool and look forward to a fantastic weekend of football, netball and community spirit.”
Further details, including team registrations and event schedules, will be released by VACSAL in the coming months.
