Close games on the tables
IT was a night of close matches at Orford and District Table Tennis earlier this week.
Two matches were decided 6-5; the games and points either equal or small margins.
There was no ladder movement this week as Warrnambool Warriors, Attunga and Koroit all had wins, with Koroit opening a gap over Tower Hill.
It’s estimated the last round of the year will determine who finishes fourth – the position decided on percentage between the co-tenants of the Koroit Scout Hall.
Neither the Warriors or Glengleeson can be shifted from their ladder positions.
Week 11 matches saw Tower Hill defeat Koroit 6.19.316-5.18.311.
Fergus Monsborough had to fight to win his three rubbers for Tower Hill.
He first survived a five-game rubber against Koroit’s Gavin Rowbottom 12-10, 12-10, 4-11, 9-11 and 1-1.
Fergus defeated Koroit’s Darren Smith 11-8, 11-5, 6-11 and 11-8.
Gavin and Darren teamed to win the first doubles, as well as two rubbers each.
Koroit’s Tony Storer and Ray Young won a rubber each.
Glengleeson lost to Attunga 2.12-9.28.
The score indicates an easy win to Attunga, but with extended games this wasn’t an easy win.
Attunga’s Val Wortley started the night coming from behind to defeat Gareth Spring in five games.
Gareth also had an extended rubber with Kelly Wortley 6-11, 11-6, 10-12 and 11-9.
Kelly also had a long rubber against Linton Price 14-12, 11-4, 4-11 and 11-3.
Both Kelly and Val Wortley won their three rubbers for Attunga while Gareth Spring was Glengleeson’s best.
Broadwater lost to Orford 5.18.336-6.18.327.
This was a nail-biting win for Orford.
Orford’s Jaden Clapp (for the first time) won his three rubbers, defeating Peter Drendal 11-6, 7-11, 11-7 and 18-16.
He also defeated Andrea Drendel in four games.
Russell Hussey won two rubbers for Orford while Peter Drendel was Broadwater’s best.
Warrnambool Warriors defeated St Helens 9.27-2.16.
Peter Owen (Warriors) defeated St Helens’ Aaron Rowbottom 11-4, 7-11, 11-8, 9-11 and 17-15.
This was Aaron’s first loss for the year.
This first rubber for the night was one of six that was extended, with Warriors winning them all.
Tony Leslie defeated St Helens’ Ally Rowbottom 9-11, 12-10, 11-12, 11-9 and 11-8.
Ally lost to David Cranwell 11-7, 8-11, 9-11, 11-7 and 12-14.
Warriors won the first doubles in five games and the second in four games.
Ladder: Warrnambool Warriors 44 points, St Helens 36, Attunga 32, Koroit 24, Tower Hill 20, Orford 12, Broadwater 8, Glengleeson 0.
