Community mourns Premier stalwart
CHARLIE Burley’s name will forever remain synonymous with Premier Speedway.

Described by many as one of Speedway’s most likeable and popular identities, the former track commentator at Premier was often seen at the track alongside wife Jean.
Charlie joined the club in 1958, with Jean joining him five or six years later.
Speaking with the Weekly in 2024, Charlie said his first Classic, in 1973, was as a driver.
“I didn’t go all that well but it was a lot of fun and something I’ll always remember,” he recalled at the time.
When Charlie stopped racing he became an announcer and proudly carried that role for well over 20 years.
Charlie and Jean are both life members of Premier Speedway, having spent the majority of their years dedicated to volunteering at the venue.
During last Sunday night’s final race meeting for the season, Charlie was honoured with a minute’s silence and a special tribute.
“We will forever be grateful for Charlie’s dedication and commitment to Premier Speedway and we pay our respects to the former voice of Premier – the man with the mic – our thoughts and sincere condolences to Jean and the entire Burley family.”
