Community rallies to save bridge
A GROUP of Allansford residents have this week spoken out in support of keeping the Ziegler Parade bridge open.
Residents say the bridge (which council acknowledged was nearing its end-of-life and has been earmarked for closure in December 2029) provides a vital egress from the town on to the Princes Highway.
“While we were happy to hear that Warrnambool City Council has allocated funds for bridge maintenance over the next three years, we were devastated to hear councillors voted in favour of its closure at the end of 2029,” resident Vicky Burns said.
At the recommendation of officers, councillors last year voted in favour of the bridge closure, citing the high costs associated with its retention.
At the time, Cr Willy Benter voted against the closure, saying it was “a definite no from me.”
“As far as I’m aware no funding has been sought for the necessary work to extend its lifespan; there is an opportunity for the community to approach organisations for funding and I hope they will see that.”
Ms Burns and fellow town residents believe that with the anticipated population growth in the area over coming years, traffic flow across the bridge will soar.
“This bridge simply should not be closed,” she said.
“Yes there are costs associated with its upkeep but this is a vital link between our town and the highway; traffic along nearby Garabaldi Lane is already congested; school pick-up and drop-off times can be hectic and there’s also plans for a new childcare centre on Grauers Road.
“Council’s suggestion of a roundabout at the highway will do very little; that’s not the solution. By keeping this bridge open, traffic can flow out of town and on to the highway.”
Member for South West Coast Roma Britnell met with residents at the bridge on Tuesday night to pledge her support.
“I totally understand the need to retain this bridge and I applaud residents for voicing their concerns,” she said.
“If elected to govern in November, our Country Roads and Bridges Program will see $6 million allocated to councils, including Warrnambool City, over four years to put towards jobs like this.
“While we certainly can’t dictate to councils how they spend that money, I certainly encourage you all to highlight to council the importance of this bridge to this town, not only for its residents and business owners but also for visitors.
“Allansford needs this important egress and I’ll certainly be working with your community in the fight to retain this important bridge.”
