Council considers land sale to bowls club

WARRNAMBOOL City Council will consider selling a parcel of land to the Warrnambool Bowls Club.

Chief executive officer Andrew Mason said the unique circumstances attached to the land in Timor Street, on which the club’s bowling greens are situated, made a sale worth investigating.

“The club currently leases the land from council on a long-term arrangement,” Mr Mason said.

“The club owns land either side of the greens but not the land on which the greens are situated.

“The club wants to erect a roof over the greens to make bowling (and other community events) possible in any weather. Without the security of land ownership, the club is not in a position to proceed with funding a roof to create an all-weather venue.

“So, the club has approached council with a plan to buy the land at market value, which is influenced by a restriction requiring the current use of the land to continue.”

According to Mr Mason, the proposal would see council sell the land to the club for $500,000, with a condition that the land be retained as a bowling green for a period of 15 years.

A final decision on whether the sale of land proceeds will be made at an open council meeting but before then council wants to hear what the community thinks about the plan.

Mr Mason encouraged interested residents to submit their thoughts on the proposal online at www.yoursaywarrnambool.com.au or, alternatively, post a letter to council.
