Defensive driving course for all

THE Moon family of Warrnambool is continuing its campaign to help bring down the region’s road toll and to improve access for drivers to informative and educational driver programs.

As mentioned in the April 3 edition of the Warrnambool Weekly, Greg and Jo Moon are determined to bring driver education to the Warrnambool district – motivated by the death of their then 16 year-old son Joel in a single car accident in 2021.

“We need to do all we can to help lower the road toll and, in turn, hopefully save other families from having to endure a similar path,” Jo said

“We’re determined to ensure everyone in our community has access to the tools needed to help them become better drivers, to know how to maintain their vehicles and to stay safe on our roads.”

As part of their ALERT Warrnambool program (which will run from May 21-23 to coincide with that month’s National Road Safety Week) a defensive driving course, ran by the professional team at Murcotts, has been organised for day one - Thursday, May 21.

This highly valuable course will be held at the Warrnambool Airport, starting from around 8.15am.

“We’re bringing defensive driver training out of the city and into our regional area,” Jo said.

“In just one day drivers can learn to be a safer, more confident road user who is aware of their car, its limits and their own capabilities.”

The program is an effective introduction to the concept of defensive driving and incorporates learning through practical in-car exercises.

The full day session also provides participants with an abundance of knowledge about vehicle safety and safer driving strategies.

The course has been designed for drivers of all levels of experience and participants must provide their own vehicle for the practical activities (these must be registered and roadworthy).

“All participants must hold a P-plate or full Australian drivers licence to enrol,” Jo said.

“And as numbers are limited, bookings are essential. Road safety is everyone’s responsibility and this course will no doubt be one of many highlights of the ALERT Warrnambool program this year.”

Anyone interested in booking their place in the defensive driving course should head to the ALERT Warrnambool social pages for details and further information.

With so many valuable sessions planned, this year’s ALERT Warrnambool program is one not to be missed.
