Thousands of race fans flocked to the showgrounds to enjoy last weekend’s fan appreciation day.

Large crowds flocked to the showgrounds on Saturday morning, eager to catch a glimpse of their favourite Sprintcar drivers who happily complied with requests for autographs and photos.

The event coincided with day two of this year’s Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic at Premier Speedway, and was also a great opportunity for teams to showcase their merchandise.

Fans travelled from far and wide to enjoy the morning, including long-time sprintcar fan Mario Cufone and his wife who flew from New Zealand to enjoy the Classic.

“My wife and I come from Christchurch each year for the Classic, and have done so for the past four,” Mario said.

“We love staying in Warrnambool and soaking up the atmosphere; it’s our annual pilgrimage to the district.

“I’m a huge Rico (Abreu) fan and I really hope he has a successful Classic. I’m thrilled I had the chance to meet him and get an autograph and wish him well.”

Despite the long lines in front of race cars across the showgrounds, fans were simply happy to have the opportunity to meet their racing idols.

“This day is a great one for us all; it’s good to be able to have a look at the cars and pick up some merchandise,” Tyson Delaney (a Marcus Dumesny fan) said.
