Feedback sought on street improvements
WARRNAMBOOL City Council is seeking resident feedback on possible safety improvements for Merri Street.

More train services, the library’s move to a new home and the construction of the railway station carpark have changed the way people use and move through the Merri Street area in recent years.
With this in mind, council is asking the community to help identify road and pedestrian safety priorities in the precinct, from the rail crossing on Wellington Street through to the intersection with Liebig Street.
Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said Merri Street had become an increasingly important connection between the city centre, the train station, South West TAFE and the Warrnambool library.
“With five daily return train services, up from three previously, more people are using the station precinct,” Cr Blain said.
“The railway station carpark is also used by many people who park there and walk into the city centre, while the Warrnambool library’s move to its new location on Kepler Street has added another destination to the area.
“Combined with South West TAFE and existing traffic, it means Merri Street can get quite busy, especially during peak times, with over 6,000 vehicle movements a day.”
Cr Blain said community members had raised concerns with council about crossing the road safely, entering and exiting the railway station on foot or by car, and making safe right turns at busy times.
“We’re looking to understand these concerns in more detail and to hear what people who use the area regularly think the priorities should be,” he said.
“The safety record also shows why it’s important to look closely at this area, with 11 collisions recorded over the past 10 years resulting in 17 injuries, including five serious injuries.
“Once we’ve gathered community feedback, the next step will be to prepare detailed designs for potential improvements and use those designs to seek state and federal funding to help deliver the upgrades.”
