Fifty years of tools, trust and tradition
VERY few small businesses can lay claim to surviving 50 years of trade, but Port Fairy’s very own Home Hardware store is next week celebrating that special milestone.
This locally owned and operated business has truly stood the test of time, not only providing employment for local staff but also giving back to the local community that has shown its loyalty over many years.
“We are very grateful to the many tradies who continue to support us, and to all our loyal customers who have not only become repeat customers but also friends over many years,” current business partner Julie Mischkulnig said.
“This business really has become entrenched in the town, and we are proud to be able to give back to those who support us, including local schools, sporting clubs and community groups.”
The Brookes Hardware story began back in 1976 when Ken and June Brookes, along with Ken’s brother Owen and their father Colin, purchased what was then known as ‘Brown’s’ at 39 Bank Street.
Seven years later the Brookes family purchased McLean’s Home Furnishings in Sackville Street (numbers 61-63) and over the following few years also bought the stores located at numbers 57 and 59.
History showed the family undertook a major renovation at the sites in 1993, filling in the driveway between 59 and 61 Sackville Street and creating a new front entry doorway – which is still the one used today.
“In October 2021 Ken and June retired and sold the business and buildings to the Pausewang Family Group (of which I am a part),” Julie said.
“This business truly is steeped in history and we felt it was important to recognise and celebrate its 50th year.
“This is our chance to not only honour the past but also recognise and say thanks to all our local tradies, businesses, community groups and families who have shown their support throughout the last 50 years.
“In times when so many small businesses are struggling, or closing their doors, we’re proud to have stood the test of time – and we’re looking forward to many more years of serving the Port Fairy community and beyond.”
As part of the birthday celebrations, members of the local Lions club will cook up a storm on the barbecue from 11am-1.30pm next Wednesday (September 9) alongside a CoastFM radio broadcast and supplier demo’s.
There will also be loads of great specials in-store from Wednesday through to Saturday and all customers who spend $50 or more will go in the draw for the chance to win a brand new 58cm TV.
