Free jazz performance this weekend
TALENTED local musician Andre Elhay is keen to keep jazz alive in Warrnambool.

“Jazz gigs are few and far between in Warrnambool so I’m excited that The Lighthouse Theatre has been keen to make use of its beautiful foyer and is putting on a series of monthly jazz gigs starting this Sunday,” he said.
“This is an exciting development for us jazz lovers; we’ll be making use of the beautiful foyer space, including the piano that featured in the ABC television show, The Piano.
“Our pianist, Gavin Franklin (aka the ‘Grandpop of Hardbop’) is looking forward to giving it a good workout.
“We’ll also have two special guests from Melbourne just for this weekend’s gig.”
Melbourne artists Tim Rex (double bass) and Rob Mercer (drums) are keen to travel to Warrnambool for this weekend’s performance.
“They’re also excited by this opportunity,” Andre said.
“To play at such a good venue, in front of a supportive audience, certainly makes it an attractive trip (from Melbourne).
“It’s a free gig so everyone is welcome to come along.”
Andre said the group was keen for young people to gain some exposure to jazz in a live setting, especially with new, local music education courses on the horizon.
“It’s time for a new generation of jazz musos to start making their presence felt here,” he said.
This Sunday’s jazz performance at The Lighthouse Theatre will run from 5pm-8pm.
