Health service celebrates NAIDOC Week
ONE of the country’s most respected Aboriginal performers and advocates, Ernie Dingo, was a special guest at NAIDOC Week celebrations in Warrnambool last week.

The celebrations, held at South West Healthcare on Wednesday, brought together culture, connection, health and family fun for people right across the region.
A Welcome to Country was performed by Lee Morgan, followed by a smoking ceremony which recognised the importance of culture, community and reconciliation.
Ernie Dingo spoke of his remarkable career and experiences, focusing on his childhood, his life, the importance of family and strong indigenous communities, and what motivates him to “keep chasing the next horizon.”

He also paid a visit to the hospital’s food services team in the kitchen and spent time chatting with guests.
A community lunch, children’s activities, and interactive expo and giveaways were other highlights of the day.
South West Healthcare’s executive director primary and community services, Kerryn Anderson, said the event aimed to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures while strengthening community connections and showcasing the range of support services available across the southwest.
“Our teams are incredibly engaged and focused on closing the healthcare gap between First Nations patients and other groups in the community,” Ms Anderson said.
South West Healthcare CEO Craig Fraser said this was one of the great days on the calendar.
“These events are a great way for us to meet with people, break down any barriers that may be preventing people from reaching out, and to celebrate the great relationship we are building with our community,” Mr Fraser said.
