Heart care close to home
HEART surgery survivor Barb Skilbeck is now volunteering with the local clinic she believes played an integral role in her recovery.

Mrs Skilbeck completed a seven-week rehabilitation program with South West Healthcare’s cardiac rehabilitation clinic and has since become a volunteer.
“When I received that initial phone call from cardiac rehabilitation consultant Ann, I felt like I was home; she was very supportive and welcoming,” Mrs Skilbeck said.
After experiencing breathlessness and an aching jaw, Mrs Skilbeck was referred by her local GP to Geelong where an angiogram discovered a blockage (which a stent alone wouldn’t be enough to correct).
Post surgery she returned to Warrnambool with a referral to South West Healthcare’s cardiac rehabilitation clinic, which she claims was one of the best things that happened during her recovery.
“One of the great things about the program is that you’re meeting up with other people who’ve been through similar circumstances; not all the same but similar, having all had significant heart events,” Mrs Skilbeck said.
She is now an active volunteer, helping others through their feelings of nerves and hesitation about recovery.
Mrs Skilbeck also helps guide participants through the education side of rehabilitation that includes the importance of diet, exercise, knowing your risk factor and the structure of the heart.
She also provides emotional support which is so important for recovery.
The rehabilitation clinic aims to help people with heart disease to live independent and active lives.
It encourages lifestyle changes that may further reduce the risk of heart problems.
For anyone who has had treatment for a cardiac event or surgery in a public or private metropolitan or Geelong hospital, a referral is usually sent to the South West Healthcare team as part of the discharge process.
A GP or other specialist can also refer, along with self-referral.
