Housing boost for Midfield workers
WORKS are now underway on Midfield Meat International’s new worker accommodation facility.
Located next to the company’s meat processing facility, the project will deliver a 184-bedroom village-style accommodation complex, giving workers access to affordable housing close to work.
According to Member for Western Victoria Jacinta Ermacora, the development will include single and double-bedroom units, along with shared kitchen, dining, laundry and outdoor facilities.
The new accommodation is expected to cater for up to 300 meat processing workers, helping one of the region’s biggest employers attract and retain the workforce it needs to grow.
“We’re investing in the infrastructure regional employers need to keep growing, and that includes affordable places for workers to live,” Ms Ermacora said.
“Backing Midfield means backing local jobs, local families and one of Victoria’s most important regional industries.”
Midfield Meat International employs more than 1,100 people and is one of regional Victoria’s largest private sector employers, processing Australian beef, lamb and veal for domestic and international markets.
The project will help Midfield attract and retain workers by providing more affordable accommodation close to work, supporting local jobs and strengthening Victoria’s food and fibre sector.
Meat is Victoria’s largest food and fibre export, generating $8.2 billion in exports in 2023–24.
“Labor is delivering more worker accommodation across regional Victoria, including housing for staff at Gippsland food producer Riviera Fresh,” Ms Ermacora said.
“The Victorian Investment Fund is also backing the sector, with recent support for expansions at Tongala Nutrition and Goulburn Valley Creamery.
“These investments are part of more than $50 billion that Labor has invested in regional Victoria over the past decade, creating jobs, backing local businesses and strengthening regional communities.”
