Last week’s May Racing Carnival brought extra traffic to the Moore Street area, highlighting the need for improvements.

Warrnambool City Council is now asking the community to help shape future safety improvements in the area.

Race days are among the precinct’s busiest periods, but as traffic data has indicated, Moore Street is busy year-round, especially during school drop-off and pick-up times.

Council is exploring ways to improve safety and access along Moore Street between Rowley Street and Brierly Street, including the intersections at Cramer Street, Garden Street, Officer Court and the Warrnambool Racecourse entrance.

Mayor Cr Ben Blain said council wanted to hear from people who lived nearby or who travelled through the area.

“Before detailed designs are developed, we want to better understand how people use this part of Moore Street and what they think would make it safer and easier to move through,” he said.

“We know this is an important connection for nearby residents, students, commuters and racecourse visitors, and it can become especially busy around school times and on race days.

“Some of the issues already identified include the difficulty of crossing Moore Street on foot or by bike, as well as challenges turning right onto Moore Street during busy times.

“We will also be working directly with Warrnambool College and nearby businesses, and this consultation is a chance for people to tell us the issues that need to be considered.”

Cr Blain said the feedback council receives will help inform detailed designs, and once those designs are complete council will be in a stronger position to estimate costs and seek funding to improve the infrastructure.
