Input sought on open spaces

FROM destinations such as Lake Pertobe and the Warrnambool Botanic Gardens to smaller neighbourhood parks, open spaces are a crucial part of life in Warrnambool.

Locals now have the opportunity to have their say on the future of open spaces, such as Lake Pertobe, through the draft Warrnambool Open Space Strategry.
Locals now have the opportunity to have their say on the future of open spaces, such as Lake Pertobe, through the draft Warrnambool Open Space Strategry.

Local residents are being invited to help shape the future of these spaces, with council’s Draft Warrnambool Open Space Strategy recently released for public comment.

The strategy looks at how open spaces can be protected and enhanced over the next 15 years.

Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said Warrn-ambool was home to 169 open spaces across the city.

“This strategy looks at the full network of local parks, reserves and green spaces across our city,” he said.

“Big or small, they all have a role to play in the health and wellbeing of our community and our natural environment.

“As we grow, it won’t just be a question of how much open space we have, but whether it’s in the right places, and how we can make the most of it.

“This draft strategy sets a clear direction to protect our valued natural areas, optimise the open space we already have, and grow the network alongside new communities, all while keeping long-term maintenance and financial sustainability front of mind.”

Residents can read the Draft Open Space Strategy and share their feedback at www.yoursaywarrnambool.com.au.

Hard copies of the strategy and feedback survey are also available at the Civic Centre, 25 Liebig Street.

“We’ve already received input from over 100 people, and that feedback helped us to develop the draft,” Cr Blain said.

“Your feedback will help shape a network of open spaces that work for families, young people, older residents and for everyone lucky enough to live in or visit Warrnambool.”
