The community is invited to provide feedback on the draft plan, which will guide the way council manages domestic animals over the next three years.

Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said that as well as being a requirement under state government legislation, the plan was an important way to support responsible pet ownership and help keep the community safe and enjoyable for everyone.

“Pets are an important part of life for many of our residents, and this plan is about encouraging and supporting responsible pet ownership,” he said.

“With more than 4200 registered dogs and 1500 registered cats in Warrnambool, domestic animal management is one of our core functions as a council.

“The draft plan looks at how we can continue to manage issues such as nuisance animals, dog attacks and animal population control.

“Cats will also be a big focus. Making sure your cat is contained from sunset to sunrise is important for your cat’s safety, but it’s also vital for local wildlife.

“We will also continue our focus on increased patrols to educate and proactively manage responsible animal management.

“We know that most people walk their dogs outside of office hours, and we have tripled the number of after-hours patrols conducted since 2017 to help educate people about their responsibilities and to have a visible presence in busy areas.

“Council has clear responsibilities under the Domestic Animals Act, but we also want the plan to reflect the expectations of the Warrnambool community, so whether you own a pet or not, I’d encourage you to read the plan and share your feedback.”

You can read the plan and provide feedback by visiting www.yoursaywarrnambool.com.au.

Hard copies are also available at the Civic Centre, 25 Liebig Street.

Submissions will close next Friday, May 29.
