Visitors will have the chance to experience one of the most unique country race days, with the staging of the 2025 Haymes Paint Jericho Cup Day this Sunday, November 30.

Run annually since 2018 on the fourth Sunday after the Melbourne Cup, the Jericho is steeped in history and tradition.

Approaching the end of the first world war, the Australian Light Horse were planning a major offensive against the Turkish empire.

In order to lull the enemy into believing nothing unusual was afoot, a race meeting was organised on the eve of the assault.

The main race was called The Jericho Cup and was ran over three miles of desert sands.

The winner was Bill the Bastard – since regarded as probably Australia’s greatest war horse.

Today, the Jericho Cup honours Bill the Bastard, the Australian Light Horsemen and their magnificent mounts.

It is run over a distance of approximately 4,600m and will once again, this Sunday, no doubt attract another quality field of starters.
