Koroit forfeits rubbers in table tennis

KOROIT this week became the first team to forfeit rubbers in the Orford and District Table Tennis Association.

Despite having to forfeit some rubbers due to lack of players, they almost pulled off a win.

Ladder movement saw Tower Hill drop out of the four while Broadwater jumped over them with their win.

Attunga and St Helens swapped positions, second and third.

Results from week two:

Warrnambool Warriors defeated Tower Hill 9.28-2.11.

Last year’s A grade winners stamped their claim to another title this year with this win.

The Warriors’ Peter Owen won his three rubbers and was ably supported by Neil Ford and David Canwell who also won two rubbers.

Best for Tower Hill was Darren Smith with two rubbers.

Gavin Rowbottom from Tower Hill gave the Warriors a run for their money, going down in two rubbers in four games (and the third) to David Cranwell 8-11, 11-8, 10-12, 11-8 and 10-12.

St Helens defeated Glengleeson 9.28-2.28.

There was improvement of the St Helens’ youngsters, with Ally Rowbottom winning her three rubbers while brother Jensen won two for the first time in the association.

Neither player got it easy though.

Ally defeated Glengleeson’s Gareth Spring 11-2, 12-15, 11-8 and 11-7.

Jensen defeated Lindsay Morton 12-10, 12-10, 12-14 and 11-8.

Aaron Rowbottom (St Helens) also won his three rubbers.

Koroit lost to Broadwater 5.16-6.19.

Playing with two players, Koroit gave away four rubbers before they started.

Koroit’s Fergus Monsbourgh won his three rubbers and paired with Tony Storer to win a doubles.

Tony also won a singles rubber.

Both Peter and Andrea Drendel won two rubbers each for Broadwater, while Leah won a rubber.

Orford lost to Attunga 5.16.328-6.19.342.

Attunga’s Val Wortley defeated Russell Hussey in a long, five game rubber and set this win up for Attunga, 10-12, 9-11, 11-8, 11-8 and 11-9.

Val came back strong after loosing the first two games.

Both teams won a doubles.

Attunga was an all-female team, something not seen in the association before, after recruiting a third family member, Michelle, as a late replacement.

Val won her three rubbers while Russell was Orford’s best with two rubbers.

Week three will see Tower Hill face St Helens, Glengleeson will play Koroit, Broadwater will face Attunga, and the Warrnambool Warriors will play Orford.
