Locals Eric Russell, Airlie Tait, Laura Watson and Merra Moir were among a large group of talented female pipers to gather and perform at Melbourne City Square last Sunday.

The World Record attempt was successful – with 145 ladies needed to surpass the previous record – with more joining later in the day.

Players travelled from many parts of Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia (and even some from New Zealand) just to participate in the event.

The event also commemorated the 1926 Australian Ladies’ Pipe Band in Scotland and the world’s first all-ladies pipe band, which formed in Melbourne in 1918.
