Locals shine on greens
LOCAL bowlers Paul Cameron and Matt Brewer have taken out the Autumn Classic at the Warrnambool Bowls Club.
The three-day classic (pairs event) concluded last Thursday, with the $30,000 event attracting 78 teams from all over Australia. Cameron and Brewer both performed remarkably well on the greens to finish ahead of a strong field.
They were followed by runners-up, Damian Riches and John Carlin (also local bowlers).
Last Friday saw the start of the $15,000 Fours event.
This attracted 30 teams, all competing for the $4000 first prize. This event was won by Scott Boschen, Michael Funcke, Mick Marchment and Warren Perris.
The runners-up (from South Australia) were Luke Pietersma, Jim Barr, Jamie Cameron and Marcus Pietersma.
The club also recently hosted the Ian Hatfield Perpetual Cup. Played on Easter Monday, the cup originated in memory of Ian who was a keen bowler at the Warrnambool club for over 10 years and was well known for his laughter, his wit and his “pun or two”.
After his death in August last year, Ian’s family wanted to remember Ian doing something he loved – and the Ian Hatfield Perpetual Cup begun.
Played on Easter Monday, the $5000 event was run as a typically fun day, which epitomised Ian and his approach to life.
Winners were Alan Sullivan, John Maher and Steven Quinlan.
Runners-up were Neville Mahney, Terry Smith and Ken Mahney.
