The Warrnambool Whalers Masters Swimming Club is hosting a ‘come and try’ day on Sunday, June 7 from 9am (and on the first Sunday of each month thereafter) at Warrnambool’s Aquazone.

Participants only need to pay their pool entry fee on the day and can then take advantage of the free hour of instruction with one of the group’s coaches.

“We welcome swimmers from the age of 18 to join our Whalers group,” coach Colin McDonald said.

“We currently have swimmers in their 20s through to those in their late 70s; and at one stage we had a swimmer who was around 90 years old. The Whalers is for all adults no matter what their fitness and skill level.

“Our coaches provide instruction in technique, stroke correction, breathing and relaxation techniques and all in a safe and welcoming environment.”

And contrary to what some believe, you don’t need to be a strong swimmer to join the Whalers Masters – you only need enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.

Pool lanes are divided according to ability, with beginners through to intermediate and advanced swimmers catered for.

“We currently have about 70 members, some have been coming for many years like myself while others have only recently joined,” Colin said.

“With the cooler winter weather fast approaching it’s an ideal time to get out and start swimming. Some of us even do regular open water swims out in the ocean and would welcome some new faces.”

The group currently holds sessions each Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday mornings, catering to the needs of workers, mums and others with busy lifestyles.

Coaching is available most mornings, along with every Tuesday and Thursday from 6pm for those wanting to improve their technique.

“I’ve been coaching for many years now and get a lot of enjoyment from it,” Colin said.

“It’s wonderful to see people improving in the water and also enjoying the health benefits that brings.”

Anyone wishing to join a come and try session, or wanting more information on the Whalers, can contact Colin on 0420 921 675.
