Moyne Health to celebrate 175 years

MOYNE Health Services in Port Fairy is proudly celebrating its 175th anniversary this year.

Moyne Health Services is Victoria’s oldest rural hospital, having been first established in 1849 as the Belfast Benevolent Society.

Since then, it has seen various changes which have enabled the service to cement itself as an integral, well respected service in its community.

Now offering residential aged care, home care packages, acute and urgent care along with various community health services, the organisation is proud of its history.

“We have always enjoyed the support and confidence of our surrounding communities,” chief executive officer Katharina Redford said.

“From very early in our journey, the health service has been fortunate to receive localised fundraising support which continues on today.”

The first community fundraising was in 1873 when money was raised to build two new wings.

Board of Directors Chair, Ms Sophie O’Keeffe, said the Port Fairy, Koroit and surrounding communities have a deep connection to Moyne Health Services.

“I myself have a lifelong connection having been born at the then Port Fairy Hospital,” Ms O’Keeffe said.

“I feel fortunate to be able to serve on the Board and see the wonderful work of every staff member and volunteer and their dedication to delivering the best care to every person, every time.”

To celebrate 175 years, the service is holding a celebratory fundraising event on June 1, including a goods and services auction.

This event is only possible due to the generosity of many businesses in the region.

Community Bank – Port Fairy and District are proudly supporting the event as the Major Gold Sponsor.

“The service is truly appreciative of the support we receive from our local residents and businesses as well as those from outside the region who recognise what an achievement it is to have served the community for 175 years,” Mrs Redford said.

Tickets to the event have already sold out.

“We thank every single community member who has supported us so far, whether through donations or purchasing tickets to the event.

“It promises to be a very enjoyable evening.”

All money raised will be utilised to improve the living environments of the residents of Belfast House and Moyneyana House.
