Multicultural issues on agenda

THE achievements, opportunities and ongoing challenges facing multicultural communities will be discussed at a special meeting in Warrnambool next week.

Community leaders, multicultural organisations and elected representatives have been invited to the meeting, which will be held at the Lighthouse Theatre on Thursday, April 9.

Hosted by the Warrnambool Multicultural Association, the event “Multicultural Warrnambool chats with Maria Dimopoulos AM,” will provide an important forum for community groups supporting migrant and refugee communities to share their experiences and strengthen local advocacy.

The session will feature Maria Dimopoulos AM, chief executive officer of the Settlement Council of Australia (Australia’s national peak body representing organisations that provide settlement services to migrants and refugees).

Her visit to Warrnambool will offer local multicultural groups an opportunity to highlight both the successes and challenges experienced by communities across the Greater Warrnambool and south coast Victoria region.

The consultation will explore the evolving needs of multicultural communities and identify ways to strengthen policies and programs that support successful settlement, social inclusion, and meaningful participation for new arrivals in regional Australia.

Importantly, the gathering will also celebrate the significant social, cultural, and economic contributions made by multicultural communities in Warrnambool.

Local organisers say the event is about recognising the positive impact of diversity and reinforcing the role multicultural communities play in strengthening the fabric of the region.

By bringing together community organisations, local leaders, and government representatives, the session aims to further enhance collaboration and support a shared vision for an inclusive and welcoming Warrnambool.

Next Thursday’s event will run from 1pm-2.30pm.
