Older residents to feature in photographs
PHOTOGRAPHY enthusiasts of all ages are encouraged to explore their creativity and showcase older people in a ‘Spirited, Wise and Wonderful’ competition.

The competition, delivered by the South West Elder Abuse Prevention Network, will challenge stereotypes in showcasing older people celebrating their achievements and interests.
Entries will be judged in two categories: junior (9-15 years) and adult (over 16 years).
“This initiative invites our community to help challenge common stereotypes around ageing by showcasing older people as active, capable and engaged,” Tracy McKendry, carer support facilitator/elder abuse prevention facilitator for mpower said.
“It celebrates their achievements, passions, interests and everyday joys. The aim is to highlight that age is not an automatic restriction on what people can successfully accomplish.”
Ms McKendry said ageism was one of the major drivers of elder abuse.
“By shifting perceptions and encouraging more positive views of ageing, the project seeks to educate the community, spark conversation and remind us of the immense value, wisdom and contribution older people bring to our region,” she said.
Ten selected photographs from each area will feature in a public exhibition at the Warrnambool Library, Hamilton Library and at a Portland location (to be confirmed).
These exhibitions will coincide with Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15.
“This is a positive, creative way for the community to make a difference,” Ms McKendry said.
“By picking up a camera or phone, starting a conversation, and helping to reshape how ageing is viewed in our society.”
Submissions will close on May 10, 2026.
