Photo competition on again

PHOTOGRAPHY enthusiasts are encouraged to look through their lenses and capture the varied and raw nature of breastfeeding for this year’s ‘Breastfeeding: No Filter’ photo competition.

Following great success last year, the photography competition and exhibition (organised by the Warrnambool Breastfeeding Centre) returns next month and organisers are hoping to see a large number of entries.

The competition aims to educate, normalise and encapsulate the breastfeeding journey.

It is hoped images will highlight breastfeeding while providing a platform for local professional and amateur artists to showcase their talents.

In 2024 the Warrnambool Breastfeeding Centre committee was looking for different ways to increase awareness, educate and celebrate breastfeeding – and this competition ticks all those boxes.

“It’s a great way to work with local artists and use imagery to educate and normalise children’s feeding,” committee member Barb Glare said.

“As a non-profit organisation that receives no annual funding, we hope this new element will be a fun way to shed light on breastfeeding and educate the community about the centre.”

The competition will have three categories and three major prizes - professional, amateur and a people’s choice award.

Both the professional and amateur awards will be announced at the opening of the exhibition at the Lighthouse Theatre at 5.30pm on Wednesday, May 20.

People will decide on the people’s choice award, with the opportunity to vote in person at the opening or online.

The winner of this category will be announced online on Monday, June 1.

The exhibition will be open to the public during theatre operating hours, allowing people to view the artwork before voting.

Applications will close on Friday, May 15.

The exhibition at the theatre will run until Sunday, May 31.
