Pigeons help deliver appeal success
THANKS to last weekend’s ‘The Great Australian Pigeon Race’ and the generosity of local donors, South West Healthcare (SWH) has reached its $115,000 fundraising target for a brand new prostate cancer detector system.
This vital piece of equipment will benefit thousands of men across the district and beyond.
Race organiser, SWH community partnerships manager Suzan Morey, thanked everyone involved – including the Warrnambool Racing Pigeon Club for the use of its members’ pigeons, along with race partner Beyond Bank, the Peter’s Project Foundation (which donated $30,000) and SWH Warrnambool and Woolsthorpe auxiliaries ($10,000 each) for their donations.
“The race itself (ran from Lascelles to Warrnambool last weekend) raised $25,650 through business and private sponsorship of the birds,” Ms Morey said.
“We also had four significant donations which saw the closing of the $115,000 appeal.”
Prior to the race, donations were also received from the Rotary Club of Warrnambool East ($5,000), South Warrnambool Football Netball Club ($950), Warrnambool East Primary staff ($1,124) and the Kirky Cooks ($500).
“This appeal is another example of how our wonderful community comes together to support compelling community needs,” Ms Morey said.
“We can now start the procurement process for a brand new prostate cancer detector system for the men in our region; it’s a fabulous result.”
