Roundabout an ‘option’ for Allansford
A ROUNDABOUT at the Princes Highway and Garabaldi Lane intersection has been identified as a potential long-term option to improve access and safety in Allansford.
The proposal has been included in the draft Allansford Transport and Access Strategy, which looks at traffic movement, road safety and walking and cycling connections across the town.
The planned closure of the Ziegler Parade Bridge by the end of 2029 was a catalyst for the strategy and for community engagement to learn from Allansford residents their preferred alternatives.
Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said a community survey in mid-2025 found more residents would prefer to use Garabaldi Lane to access the Princes Highway rather than Grauers Road following the bridge closure.
“Garabaldi Lane is likely to become an increasingly important access point for Allansford, so we need to look at how that intersection can work as safely and effectively as possible,” Cr Blain said.
“The draft strategy identifies a roundabout as a potential longer-term option, together with widening of the Princes Highway.
“Another option is a westbound acceleration lane to help vehicles entering the Princes Highway from Garabaldi Lane.”
Cr Blain said the Princes Highway was managed by the Victorian Department of Transport and Planning, meaning any major upgrades would need state government support and funding.
“Council has an important advocacy role to play in making the case for improvements, but whether an acceleration lane or a roundabout is built is ultimately a decision that will be made by the state government,” he said.
“The draft strategy also includes a range of improvements that council can work on directly, including better conditions for people walking and riding in Allansford.”
