Safety push continues at Bushfield
CONNECTING Warrnambool members are continuing their advocacy for improved safety at the Bridge Road/Bushfield Recreation Reserve intersection.
Group leader Elise McKinnon believes the intersection is regularly used by children and families to cross the busy Hopkins Highway to get to football, cricket, netball and other activities at the oval.
“This is an intersection where we’ve seen truck rollovers, vehicles leave the road and ongoing roadside damage, yet it is also a regular crossing point for children,” she said.
“Recently, thanks to Moyne Shire Council, a pedestrian counter was installed at the Bushfield Recreation Reserve so we can start gathering actual data on how many children, families and community members are crossing there.
“We’re incredibly grateful to the council for making the equipment available so quickly.”
Ms McKinnon said while the reserve sits within Warrnambool City Council, many Moyne Shire families also use the oval.
“Cr Jim Doukas was wonderful in looking at what Moyne could do to help,” she said.
“This is a lovely example of neighbouring communities working together when it comes to keeping local children safe.
“We managed to get it installed in time to capture some of the remaining football activity, including Thursday and Sunday, and it will stay in place throughout the school holidays.”
Ms McKinnon said the information collected would become part of the broader evidence the Connecting Warrnambool was building to support further safety improvements at the intersection, including the group’s case for reducing the speed limit to 60 km/h.
