Scholarship opens doors for lactation support
THE Warrnambool Breastfeeding Centre is strengthening local lactation support through its international board-certified lactation consultant scholarship.
A new initiative, this scholarship provides financial funding and in-kind support.
Eligible applicants need to be qualified health professionals meeting IBLCE eligibility requirements, must live and work in the south west and demonstrate a commitment to breastfeeding support.
The scholarship winner must also commit to completing the IBCLC examination within 18 months of accepting the scholarship.
This year’s successful applicant, Ashton King, was excited to combine her midwifery experience with her newfound knowledge of lactation to assist mothers in becoming the mothers they have envisioned.
Going into midwifery, Ashton thought her passion would be in the birth suite, helping a woman become a mother.
After becoming a mother herself, she realised that birth is only a small part.
Ashton’s own breastfeeding story revealed to her that there was a lack of support and a knowledge gap when it came to breastfeeding that can often leave women confused and unable to access what can be beautiful bonding moments between a baby and mother.
With three young children, amid an economic crisis and limited ability to work, this scholarship allowed Ashton to accelerate her professional development in a field she had always wanted to explore.
Allowing her access to more family-friendly working hours means she can be present for women and families while balancing work and being present for her young family.
The Warrnambool Breastfeeding Centre hopes to continue this scholarship in coming years to help strengthen and expand support available for all breastfeeding mothers.
