Warrnambool College school councillors (from left) Geoff Ward, Monty Irving, Greg Twitt and Hera Sheppard are campaigning for a new indoor sporting facility.

They say that a new double court facility would ensure the continued success of their well-regarded Sporting Pathways Program.

“Warrnambool College is the largest government school in our entire region, and we deserve an indoor sports stadium with sufficient space for our school’s needs,” student representative on the school council, Monty Irving, said.

“Our current indoor sporting space is getting old and is not big enough for the number of PE classes at our school.

“There is also no indoor space which can fit all students for a whole school assembly. At the moment we either have to have assemblies outdoors, or students have to be split across two different spaces which is not ideal.”

Parents and students on the school council are disappointed that the Department of Education has not provided any funding for a new facility, despite the school consistently raising it as an issue for at least 15 years.

As a result they have decided to speak out themselves in an attempt to get a new sporting facility.

“We don’t think it is fair that our school is the only one without a double basketball court sized sports facility,” Monty said.

“A new indoor sporting facility would not only be great for the Sporting Pathways Program students, it would benefit the whole school.

“It would also be available outside of school hours to community groups, providing two extra courts for the regular basketball or volleyball competitions and tournaments.”

The group has organised a petition to the Minister for Education requesting funding for a new facility.

To date, the petition has been signed by more than 200 people from the school community, including students, parents and other supporters.

The group has delivered the petition to Member for Western Victoria Jacinta Ermacora, requesting that Ms Ermacora personally hand the petition to Ben Carroll, the Minister for Education.

“Our school deserves to have a sports facility that the whole community can enjoy and be proud of,” Monty said.
