Sessions to focus on dementia support

FAMILY carers of people living with dementia are invited to join with aged care professionals for a tailored information event in Warrnambool this month.

The sessions, to be held next Thursday, February 12 at The Lady Bay Resort, are being organised by Dementia Support Australia.

“Supporting a person living with dementia can be daunting and at times can feel overwhelming,” executive general manager for Dementia Support Australia, Mark Peacock, said.

“This event is for carers who want to know how to manage changing behaviours in a person with dementia, while providing a safe and supportive environment for that person.”

An estimated 110,600 people are living with dementia in Victoria, many of them in regional areas.

Figures also show that two out of three people living with dementia are in the community (usually at home) and 54 per cent of people in residential aged care are living with dementia.

Dementia Support Australia is a free advisory and support service funded by the federal government and led by HammondCare, a national leader in dementia care, support and research.

Dementia Support Australia has specially developed local dementia support events.

These aim to provide carers with insightful information and practical advice from dementia experts.

Participants will meet with like-minded carers, be given clear help and advice from dementia professionals, and network with people within their community.

“Our dementia consultants and specialists will share practical insights on supporting changes to mood and behaviour, carer well-being, and how to access dementia care expertise,” Mr Peacock said.

“We urge carers in the Warrnambool community to join us on February 12 for the valuable information, tools and resources we offer, and also because it’s helpful to share your experiences with other carers and professionals.”

Two sessions will be held at The Lady Bay Resort next Thursday.

The first will run from 10am-12noon and the second from 2pm-5pm.
