Solemn tribute
THE names and faces of four soldiers who never returned from Vietnam now hold pride of place inside the Warrnambool RSL.

The four western district men, who lost their lives during the Vietnam War, were honoured during Saturday’s Anzac Day service.
The families of Ralph Niblett, Bill Carroll, Ian Scott and Graham Warburton were on hand to watch the emotional unveiling of a new memorial to honour their loved ones.
The families expressed their deep sorrow and gratitude for the recognition they received – a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who served in the armed forces and their lasting impact of their service on the community.
“It was a photo on a wreath laid by the sister of a soldier killed in Vietnam that sparked an idea to honour the four south-west men killed in action during that conflict,” Warrnambool RSL president Richard Ridgwell told the crowd at the weekend.
“This is a wonderful tribute to those men and the sacrifices they made and it will hang in pride of place at the RSL. I welcome and encourage everyone to visit and take the time to look at these photos and the stories they tell.”
An inscription on the frame reads:
Dedicated to all who have lost a loved one to Vietnam through service to our country.
Throughout the years, friends, comrades and relatives have remembered the tragedy of those who never returned home, or on returning home are not the person they were.
Many grieve in silent isolation.
Some share their loss with those in a similar situation at times of community commemoration.
Each family’s experience is unique and is truly representative of so many of those who still remember and mourn.
On Vietnam Veteran’s Day, a sheaf of poppies with a photograph attached is now central to this memorial collection.
A name had a face. This was the catalyst that inspired the creation of this photographic tribute to the young men of the western district who tragically lost their lives in Vietnam.
The commitment to the memory of loved ones is emblematic of the devotion and dedication of each family represented here.
They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them.
Lest We Forget.
