The enticing, sweet smell of donuts will once again fill the air at the Warrnambool-based school each Tuesday when students return from holidays next term.

The 14 year 12 students are learning new skills in the kitchen, and making a healthy profit from sales – the majority of which will help offset the cost of their school camp later in the year.

Year 12 captains Charlotte McGregor and Riley Pedler are extremely proud of their group and the product they produce.

“Merri Doughnuts started about four years ago and it’s a great way for us to make some money for the school and for camps and things,” Charlotte said.

“This year our group has already used some of the money for our year 12 jumpers plus a gazebo and some hats and aprons – we’re going on a camp to Melbourne for three days in August and we’re raising money for that trip too.”

The delicious donuts, which are available in both cinnamon and iced, have become a “big hit” with several local businesses and are also seen at various events across the district.

“We’ve got our regular weekly orders that we deliver to some of the businesses in towns but we can also supply donuts for functions and other special events.

“On our biggest day so far we made about 1,000 donuts which was a lot of work but it’s fun and we’ve all got jobs to do.”

Because of his involvement in the project, year 12 student Johno now wants to work in a bakery when he finishes school.

“I love the donuts, they’re really tasty and I really want to work in a bakery one day,” he said.

With so many eager students in the kitchen, Merri Doughnuts will no doubt continue to grow and thrive.

“Any business in the community who would like to place an order, or anyone who has a special event coming up that would like donuts, is welcome to call the school,” Charlotte said.
