Table tennis finals approach
WITH the final week of the home and away season completed, finals now approach for the Orford and District Table Tennis Association competition.
The ladder has now been divided into the top four for A grade and the bottom four for B grade.
St Helens received a forfeit from Attunga which meant they finished second, while Attunga held on to third.
Last year’s B grade premiers have made a large jump from the 2025 season, showing the improvement of Ally and Jensen Rowbottom.
Attunga and Koroit round out the top four.
A last ditch win by Tower Hill wasn’t enough to sneak into fourth, with Koroit able to hold on by the smallest of margins – 297 games won for the year compared to Tower Hill’s 201.
Orford, Broadwater and Glengleeson make up the other B grade teams.
The A grade finals will be held at Warrnambool table tennis stadium.
The first semi-final will see Attunga face Koroit and in the second semi-final Warrnambool Warriors will play St Helens.
The B grade finals will be at Orford Hall.
Broadwater and Glengleeson will play the first semi-final while in the second, Tower Hill will face Orford.
Results from week 14:
Glengleeson lost to Tower Hill 2.9-9.28.
With Darren Smith and Gavin Rowbottom winning their three rubbers, this set the win for Tower Hill.
David Rowbottom also contributed two rubbers.
Glengleeson’s Gareth Spring won a rubber and their other win was a double.
Broadwater lost to Warrnambool Warriors 2.14-9.28.
The Warriors won five of the six extended rubbers in a night where scores didn’t indicate the standard of the table tennis.
The Warriors’ Neil Ford opened the night, defeating Peter Drendel 11-6, 7-11, 7-11, 11-7 and 11-5.
He also won against Leah Drendel 13-11, 11-5, 9-11, 11-3 and 11-3.
Though Peter Owen won his three rubbers for Warriors, Peter Drendel made him work for it in their rubber, with Owen winning 11-5, 5-11, 9-11, 11-7 and 11-7.
David Cranwell and Andrea Drendel played the longest game of the night, with David winning 14-12, 5-11, 11-7 and 11-6.
Both David and Neil won two rubbers each.
Peter and Andrea won a rubber for Broadwater.
Attunga forfeited to St Helens.
Koroit defeated Orford 6.19-5.18.
Playing with two players, Koroit still won the night.
Fergus Monsborough won his three rubbers for Koroit, while Ray Young contributed with two rubbers, combing to win the only doubles.
Best for Orford was Russell hussy with two rubbers.
