Table tennis ladder unchanged

WITH all the top four teams winning this week, the Orford and District Table Tennis Association ladder remains unchanged.

Tower Hill has opened a two-game break over Koroit in fifth place.

Koroit has a chance to reduce this gap next week if they can defeat Broadwater.

The fourth and fifth positions will be the ones to watch in coming weeks.

Results from round eight:

Orford forfeited to Tower Hill.

Warrnambool Warriors def Glengleeson 9.29-2.6.

Peter Owen from Warriors won his three rubbers but featured a couple of interesting games – one against Linsay Morton 15-13 and the other against Linton Price 20-18 (he also went on to win both rubbers in three).

Gareth Spring was Glengleeson’s best with two rubbers.

St Helens def Broadwater 8.24-3.13.

With both Ally and Aaron Rowbottom winning their three rubbers, it set up their win over Broadwater.

Ally didn’t get it all her own way when she defeated Broadwater’s Peter Drendel 17-15, 14-12, 12-14, 9-11 and 11-6.

The other extended rubbers were St Helens’ winning the doubles in four games.

Koroit lost to Attunga 5.20.373-6.21.367.

Koroit’s Fergus Monsborough won his three rubbers and Koroit won both doubles rubbers.

Attunga was too strong on the night, hanging on for the closest of wins.

Koroit also won more points.

Attunga’s Kelly and Val Wortley and Gus Looney won two rubbers each.

The closeness of the rubbers was indicated by the three, five game rubbers.

Koroit won the second doubles coming from two games down 5-11, 8-11, 11-8, 12-10 and 11-6.

Kelly defeated Tony Storer 11-7, 11-6, 7-11, 5-11 and 11-8.

Kelly also defeated Ray Young in another five game rubber, 8-11, 9-11, 11-4, 14-12 and 11-4.

There were several high scoring games throughout the scoresheet.

Although they still lost, Koroit won more points on the night.

In round seven the previous week, Tower Hill defeated Glengleeson 6.18-5.19.

Tower Hill won both the doubles rubbers which cemented their win on the night, with Darren Smith winning three rubbers and then teaming with David Rowbottom to comfortably win the first doubles.

He then teamed with Mary Weallens to win the second doubles after losing the first two games to Glengleeson’s Gareth Spring and Lindsay Morton 10-12, 11-12, 11-7, 11-5 and 11-8.

Gareth and Linton Price were best for Glengleeson, winning two rubbers each.

Warrnambool Warriors defeated Broadwater 11.33-0.12.

This game was not as one sided as the scoreline may indicate.

Eight of the 11 rubbers were extended.

Warriors’ Neil Ford and David Cranwell played two five game rubbers, along with Peter and Andrea Drendel for Broadwater.

Neil opened the night, defeating Peter Drendel 11-13, 11-6, 8-11, 11-8 and 11-7.

He then finished the night with a win over Andrea Drendel 8-11, 6-11, 11-7, 11-7 and 11-7.

David Cranwell defeated Peter 8-11, 11-9, 11-5, 9-11 and 11-7.

His defeat of Andrea was a much closer rubber, 11-6, 13-11, 2-11, 2-11 and 14-12.

St Helens defeated Attunga 6.21.353-5.17.343.

St Helens was able to win both the doubles rubbers, while Ally Rowbottom contributed a rubber when she defeated Gus Looney in three games.

With five of the rubbers extended, high points and long rallies, this was not an easy win.

St Helens won both doubles in four games.

Ally lost two rubbers, the first to Kelly Wortley 8-11, 5-11, 11-9 and 8-11, and then to Val Wortley 9-11, 14-12, 6-11 and 9-11.

Both Val and Kelly won two rubbers each.

Orford lost to Koroit 4.5-7.25.

This match started with a bang; five of the first six rubbers were extended before the highlight rubber was the last of the night.

Orford’s Jaden Clapp defeated Ray Young 12-10, 12-14, 12-10 and 11-7.

Ray lost an earlier rubber to Russell Hussey 3-11, 12-10, 8-11, 11-8 and 8-11.

Russell lost to Koroit’s Fergus Monsborough 12-10, 4-11, 7-11 and 8-11.

Jaden defeated Tony Storer 12-10, 10-12, 11-6 and 11-8.

Fergus was the three rubber winner.
