Table tennis set to recommence
THE big news out of the annual general meeting of the Orford and District Table Tennis Association is that the youngsters have stood up.
The association now has a Facebook page, moving into the 21st century, sorry the electric score boards and heated umpire’s chairs are still a way off - so, if you can google you will find the latest news from Orford thanks to Jaden Clapp.
In another move Kelly Wortley was elected to assist Andrew McGrath with all the new computer payments/reports required by Table Tennis Victoria.
Andrew will continue his unbroken tenure as secretary, both he and David Rowbottom were returned as secretary and president.
The association is holding a Come and Try night on Wednesday April 15, 7.30pm at the Orford Hall.
This is another way to encourage young and those not so young to play table tennis.
Bats will be available to use so no equipment purchase is needed.
Any new residents to the district are also encouraged to come along, especially if having played table tennis previously.
Players will be there to give coaching on the night; cost is $2 per player.
Due to player shortage Tarrone will not enter a team this year.
Macarthur’s Drendel family has put their hand up to return, playing as a team after being part of Glengleeson in past years.
While the Warrnambool Vikings have spread their wings to all points of the globe as the international team, they are in recess for 2026.
Koroit has made arrangements to play in the Koroit Scout Hall, bringing table tennis back to that venue after an absence of 20 plus years; hopefully some will be available to play.
The opening tournament will be held on Wednesday, April 22 from 7.30pm at the Orford Hall.
Anyone interested in playing is asked to place their names before the start of pennant on Wednesday, April 29, 7.30pm at the venue of the home team.
Current venues include Orford Hall, Warrnambool table tennis stadium, Koroit Scout Hall and Attunga (played in Warrnambool).
In the past Hawkesdale, Woolsthorpe, Port Fairy, Bessiebelle and several others played in well-ventilated wool sheds as home venues.
