Thunder Point on the radar

THUNDER Point Coastal Reserve has been the target of illegal clearing, track making and rubbish dumping in recent weeks.

“This is extremely disappointing and we’re looking at ways in which to prevent the environmental damage and also how some of the more severely impacted areas might be remediated,” council chief executive officer Andrew Mason said.

“Dozens of shrubs and small trees have been pruned or felled and there has been a lot of earth moved, without permission, to create jumps and berms.”

Mr Mason said tracks have also been widened and the council was now looking at ways in which it will be able to monitor activity in the reserve - and take action against those who are undertaking illegal vegetation removal.

“The vast majority of local bike riders do the right thing and most Warrnambool residents are proud of our unique coastline and dunes environments and would prefer to see the reserve treated in a way that protects it for future generations,” Mr Mason said.

“This is a precious part of our natural environment that deserves to be protected.

“So, we’re appealing to those responsible to stop trashing Thunder Point and to understand that further action will be taken if this behaviour persists.”
