Tough round for home teams

ORFORD and District Table Tennis Association players faced chilly conditions this week on a night that wasn’t a successful one for the home teams.

Tower Hill has jumped from sixth to fourth after defeating Broadwater while Warrnambool Warriors still hold on to top spot.

St Helens and Attunga round out the top four – with Koroit, Orford and Broadwater (with two wins each) only separated by percentage.

Round six saw Broadwater go down to Tower Hill 3.12-8.24.

This was a regulation win for Tower Hill, with both Darren Smith and Gavin Rowbottom winning their three rubbers before teaming with David Rowbottom to win both the double rubbers in four games.

Darren and David won 12-10, 13-11, 7-11 and 11-9 against Andrea and Peter Drenedel.

Gavin and David defeated Andrea and Leah Drendel 11-5, 10-12, 11-9 and 11-6.

The only other extended rubber for the night was Darren’s defeat of Broadwater’s Peter Drendel 11-5, 10-12, 11-6 and 13-11.

Glengleeson lost to Orford 2.7-9.28.

There may have been only one extended rubber but there was a number of extended games – with the highest being 18-6; certainly one way to keep warm on a cold night.

Orford’s Russell Hussey won his three rubbers while Gareth Spring was Glengleeson’s best with two rubbers.

The highlight rubber was the second doubles.

Jaden Clapp and Steven Young defeated Glengleeson’s Linton Price and Lindsay Morton 12-10, 16-18, 11-7 and 11-9.

Attunga lost to Warrnambool Warriors 4.17-7.25.

With seven extended rubbers this was not an early night.

Neil Ford (Warriors) played in the two longest rubbers, losing to Kelly Wortley 9-11, 11-4, 8-11, 13-11 and 11-5.

He then went on to defeat Val Wortley 6-11, 11-13, 11-8, 11-6 and 12-10.

Peter Own won his three rubbers for Warriors while Kelly was best for Attunga with two rubbers.

Koroit lost to St Helens 5.18.338-6.20.333.

Winning more points than the opposition doesn’t win the match but makes for good table tennis and a way to keep warm.

Four rubbers were extended, the longest saw Ally and Jensen Rowbottom (St Helens) defeat Tony Storer and Ray Young 11-7, 13-11, 5-11, 9-11 and 11-9.

Aaron Rowbottom won his three rubbers while Ray and Fergus Monsborough both won two each for Koroit.

Next week, Tower Hill will face Glengleeson, Warrnambool Warriors will take on Broadwater, St Helens will play Attunga and Orford and Koroit will meet.

Ladder: Warrnambool Warriors 24 points, St Helens 20, Attunga 16, Tower Hill 12, Koroit 8, Orford 8, Broadwater 8, Glengleeson 0.
