Town earns heart safe status

THE township of Koroit was one of 12 across the state to recently graduate as a ‘Heart Safe Community.’

This brings to 66 the number of heart safe communities across Victoria, thanks to a 12-month program run by Ambulance Victoria and the Heart Foundation.

The program, which empowers more community members to take life-saving action, allows participants to learn the simple skills that can make the difference between life and death.

This includes recognising a cardiac arrest, giving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), using an automated external defibrillator (AED), registering publicly accessible AEDs and signing up as GoodSAM responders.

Over the past year, across those 12 towns, Ambulance Victoria trained more than 4300 community members to call, push, shock – and there are now 172 registered AEDs, with 70 of them publicly accessible 24/7.

In Koroit alone, 252 community members have trained in ‘call, push, shock.’

The town has also registered nine new AEDs (bringing to 12 the number of machines in Koroit), with five of those publicly accessible 24/7.
