Vigil shines a light on family violence
WARRNAMBOOL shone a light on family violence with a candlelight vigil across the town last week.

On the first Wednesday in May (May 6), family and sexual violence advocates, specialist sector leaders and community members gathered for the Warrnambool Candlelight Vigil.
The vigil honoured and remembered the women and children who have been killed as the result of family violence.
It also provided a space for people to grieve, acknowledge the individuals behind the statistics, and share messages of hope, support and community for those impacted by violence.
Family and sexual violence remains prevalent and is increasing across our community.

On average in Australia, one woman a week is killed by a current or former partner.
In the Warrnambool LGA, reported family violence incidents increased by 15 per cent over the last financial year.
The Warrnambool Candlelight Vigil formed part of the state-wide Safe Steps Candlelight Vigil and coincided with National Domestic Violence Remembrance Day on May 6.

As part of the vigil, landmarks across Victoria were illuminated in purple to raise awareness of family violence.
In Warrnambool, this included the Lighthouse Theatre and the Fletcher Jones Silver Ball, along with several church windows and other locations.
