Warm conditions greeted the side for the opening ‘hub round’ of the Western Victoria Female Football League on Sunday.

Having travelled to Tyrendarra, the Blues were keen to test their skills on the ground.

Three women’s matches took place on the day to open the season.

Facing newcomers Branxholme Wallacedale, the game proved an even contest across the four quarters.

Under 18 players Dekotah Ellis and Star Jackson took full advantage of their opportunity to play in the senior side and were the Blues’ leading goal kickers on the day, both finishing with two and driving much of the side’s play with their run and carry.

Captain Latoya Folim was a solid presence and led the team with her hard tackling and booming kicks forward.

Annie Jephcott tackled and chased everything in her sights but unfortunately without a bench to rotate players, the Blues ran out of legs in the last term.

Branxholme managed to hold on for their first ever win, defeating the Blues 5.5.35 to 4.5.29.

Among the best for the Blues were Dekota Ellias, LaToya Folima, Star Jackson, Lisa Griffiths, Annika Jephcott and Cody Gilmour.

The girls will now have the Easter weekend off and will return on April 12 for a home game against another new side in Terang Mortlake.
